Mon Jul 20 17:22:11 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: btw. Crat: "he"? Jess: could you rephrase that "better to..." line?
Mon Jul 20 17:23:59 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: if it's about you really being a guy, we don't care
Mon Jul 20 17:24:06 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: we got tons of guys here that are really female
Mon Jul 20 17:24:17 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: or at least they play videogames as if they were
Mon Jul 20 17:25:23 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: i am australian and YES i do know Nafe. He says not to say that on here because it will make ppl angery. He has been giving me lessons and he is actually a nice person in real life (although somewhat disturbed with mental illness).
Mon Jul 20 17:26:03 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: not too many people will admit to being australian around here
Mon Jul 20 17:26:18 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: also he will help me with the mud from time to time but he says he isnt allowed on interchan
Mon Jul 20 17:26:53 2009
[dchat]
Detah@Dead Souls Dev: we tried to remove his keyboard entirely, but he just bought a new one.
Mon Jul 20 17:28:05 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: he has been caught doing all sorts hacking and things, i think when he gets behind a keyboard he tries to cause as much mayhem as he can, no matter what enviroment.
Mon Jul 20 17:28:16 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: but you should know i'm ruthless on the banhammer and wont hesitate to hose you even if its not yer fault
Mon Jul 20 17:29:11 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: he actually soiled himself at a BBQ with all my friends there from school.
Mon Jul 20 17:29:54 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: you almost had me believing that wasnt you, nafe
Mon Jul 20 17:30:40 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: and thats why i shouldnt mention him, but i dont like to play games.
Mon Jul 20 17:30:59 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: well the less you talk about him, the friendlier to you people will be
Mon Jul 20 17:31:27 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: I mean, this personality could really be independent
Mon Jul 20 17:32:59 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: so after i learn this mudcode nafe says he will teach me javascript after he learns it, and combined with html I should have a good basis for learning more programming.
Mon Jul 20 17:33:30 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: if your goal is to be a rounded programmer, i'm not sure i can recommend lpc as the place to start
Mon Jul 20 17:34:23 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: (I'm not sure javascript counts as "programming" either...)
Mon Jul 20 17:34:47 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: well he convinced my parents that this is the way to start because its fun and will hold my interest and tech me to think like a programmer.
Mon Jul 20 17:34:58 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Server-side javascript does exist. TEH HORROR!
Mon Jul 20 17:36:43 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: you're an underage girl on a network i control
Mon Jul 20 17:37:03 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: i'm trying to think of the liabilities if you're found stuffed in someone's trunk
Mon Jul 20 17:37:54 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: Jessitron, I must advise that you do not heed the instructions for adding intergossip and free_speech to your communication repertoire
Mon Jul 20 17:39:26 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: i have a mud at home that i learned on , i mainly use the QCS and when we do something better nafe helps me edit the file directly
Mon Jul 20 17:40:44 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: if you are connecton to the shell by ssh (putty, for example), then WinSCP is one of the editors that supposedly can access the remote files.
Mon Jul 20 17:40:46 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: mum and dad like me doing this as a start to learn programming, also nafe teaches me about hardware, i have built 2 computers already :)
Mon Jul 20 17:40:51 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: (never used it myself, but heard things)
Mon Jul 20 17:41:13 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: ah ok. if you want to learn programming you can learn some basics doing LPC (not using QCS) but
Mon Jul 20 17:41:22 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: nafe said something about nano on the server, thats why i wanted the mud loading screen not to hog the vps
Mon Jul 20 17:42:12 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: it has advantages in that you can see results pretty quickly.
Mon Jul 20 17:42:20 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: if you use putty and the latest alpha, ced should work ok
Mon Jul 20 17:42:22 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: i love making things in the mud and its fun and my parents like me doing it and nafe and i have put together some very funny things
Mon Jul 20 17:42:27 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: other methods though more proper might be a bit boring.
Mon Jul 20 17:42:37 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: i think you should invite your parents to hang out on your mud
Mon Jul 20 17:42:50 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: let them see what you do, let them see the intermud chats
Mon Jul 20 17:44:20 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: nafe comes around and we been doing this for nearly 2 years now, mum and dad both know what its all about
Mon Jul 20 17:45:10 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: they can read but dad asks me how to spell what and because
Mon Jul 20 17:45:48 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: my sister has an IQ of 50 and the school says she is un teachable
Mon Jul 20 17:46:50 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: nafe is the only person who talks to me like an adult and is interesting to talk to, if you seen my family you would understand
Mon Jul 20 17:47:58 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: they send there kids to school and the schools just look after the kids
Mon Jul 20 17:48:56 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: ill probabley get a job in the mines as a computer tech
Mon Jul 20 17:49:45 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: almost all the boys in my class are ADHD
Mon Jul 20 17:49:58 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: don't worry. i was 14 when I joined intermud and nobody ever found me stuffed in a trunk.
Mon Jul 20 17:50:31 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: you did'nt say that when you put me in your trunk.
Mon Jul 20 17:51:09 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: i guess that my liability is no greater than some mud that lets underagers in
Mon Jul 20 17:51:31 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: perhaps even less so because i explicitly disclaim responsibility for tells and such
Mon Jul 20 17:52:12 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: nafe put windows xp on a black EEEPC for me, my sister and me and nafe have all got the same type
Mon Jul 20 17:53:06 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: his real name is nathan but we call him nacynay... because he is fat and has man titties bigger than my mums
Mon Jul 20 17:53:28 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: remember how i said people would be friendlier if you didnt discuss nafe?
Mon Jul 20 17:53:44 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: please dont make me get more direct with you
Mon Jul 20 17:55:44 2009
[dchat]
Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: i have to go its very late here and i am sick with the flu and i dont hve school tomorrow my parents dont know im here now because im under my sheets with my little laptop and my sister is asleep on the top bunk. byebye
Mon Jul 20 18:02:38 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: well i think this will take care of itself
Mon Jul 20 18:03:01 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: whether it's a 15 year old girl or nafe, it seems to share mannerisms in communication
Mon Jul 20 18:03:11 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: so i'll just wind up banning it eventually anyway
Mon Jul 20 18:03:58 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: of what to do with the giggly 14 year old from iowa WITHOUT a pottymouth
Mon Jul 20 18:04:15 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: perhaps that question was infelicitously phrased
Mon Jul 20 18:07:01 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: that sounds like a good idea. You could add comments to the code itself too... "channels might be unsuitable for minors, use good judgment" and add something about "mud administrators are expected to forward this warning to their users."
Mon Jul 20 18:07:42 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: im prolly just blowing it out of proportion
Mon Jul 20 18:07:47 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: The problem is that when you police the network you lose a lot of your common carrier protections
Mon Jul 20 18:07:59 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: you are a network provider, but because you moderate the usage of the network, you assume liabilities.
Mon Jul 20 18:08:38 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: Law's are written by gibbering fools. They don't usually make sense.
Mon Jul 20 18:08:52 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: ban her for knowing nafe, not for being a child.
Mon Jul 20 18:09:18 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: See, that comment is why I think I'm gonna turn the news on and find HM in the middle of a shootout with Texas law enforcement
Mon Jul 20 18:09:27 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: Hellmonger has a point. limiting the language allowed might remove some common carrier protections. although I think that point is currently being disputed in courts.
Mon Jul 20 18:15:57 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Generally the MOTD states that by connecting to the server you states that you are allowed by law etc etc
Mon Jul 20 18:15:59 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: I dunno if moderation changes accountability for this stuff
Mon Jul 20 18:16:18 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: So anything you run into is your own fault.
Mon Jul 20 18:16:24 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: that's like saying a restaurant that has a "no shoes, no service" policy will be held liable if somebody's wallet is stolen in the bathroom
Mon Jul 20 18:16:58 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: cuss words are not directly related to what two people do in tells
Mon Jul 20 18:18:31 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: because the law is fucked up and unclear and assigns liability in strange ways.
Mon Jul 20 18:18:48 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: HM, sorry, but it's hard to take legal advice from an anarchist
Mon Jul 20 18:19:06 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: But every statement you use to justify this stuff starts with "well the law is fucked up"
Mon Jul 20 18:19:25 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: i'm not trying to provide legal advice. i'm just pointing out that common carrier protection may not apply here.
Mon Jul 20 18:19:35 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: well, there's also the point that "angry parents" != "lawsuit". being concerned is important, but you can be sued for *anything* at any time, so living in fear is not necessarily the solution.
Mon Jul 20 18:19:49 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: and in the past, filtering was a determining factor.
Mon Jul 20 18:20:19 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: I'm sure parents will be angry at anyone who would even be remotely involved in this, but != lawsuit is right
Mon Jul 20 18:21:49 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: We get into the "if only people hadn't invented the internet, my little girl would not have run off with Duuk"
Mon Jul 20 18:21:58 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: There is a limit to accountability and legal liability
Mon Jul 20 18:24:02 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: and if parents are loosing unsupervised kids on the interbutt
Mon Jul 20 23:06:00 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: wodan, have you tested dw on ubuntu with compression on?
Sun Aug 2 06:34:55 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev raises his hand and tells hypereye he is present
Mon Aug 3 18:23:27 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev rants incoherently about non-free software, the creation of evil that's known as dbus, cursor blinking rates, his jupiter-sized headache and inability to find a tiling window manager that's doing it the right way. Not necessarily in that order.
Mon Aug 3 18:35:59 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Well... the universe is so large that you prolly could find a 5x4cm planet somewhere.
Mon Aug 3 18:36:23 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: But in the common concept of one... it can't be.
Mon Aug 3 18:52:01 2009
[dchat]
Kalinash@Fire and Ice: do you have an ache in all the diodes down your side?
Mon Aug 3 22:26:02 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Anybody knows what's the limit over which overdosing ibuprofene is considered dangerous?
Mon Aug 3 22:26:27 2009
[dchat]
Wodan@Discworld: pretty close to the maximum suggested on the box if you're not lucky
Mon Aug 3 22:27:28 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: I wouldn't keep up 800mg/6-8 hours for long tho. :)
Mon Aug 3 22:27:29 2009
[dchat]
Mazu@Left To Die: Overdosing is, well, very hard. You can overdose on general food before you die to ibuprofen, but it's still possible to get sick from taking more than the numbers I gave above.
Mon Aug 3 22:27:44 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: yeah. 1800 is still reasonably safe for what I know.
Mon Aug 3 22:28:34 2009
[dchat]
Sys@BlackHole: paracetemol is the one to watch it's overdose is only 2-4 times the effective dose iirc
Mon Aug 3 22:29:24 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: prob with ibuprofen isn't so much overdose as masking of things you better know about.
Mon Aug 3 22:29:43 2009
[dchat]
Ninja@Dead Souls Dev: and damage that doesn't kill right away, like stomach lining.
Mon Aug 3 22:30:07 2009
[dchat]
Ninja@Dead Souls Dev: i used to just count pills per day for something or the other...nuprin or wotnot.
Mon Aug 3 22:30:27 2009
[dchat]
Ninja@Dead Souls Dev: new stuff really made me feel good for a while.
Mon Aug 3 22:31:59 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Well, with a bit of mind training you may learn to ignore the pain.
Mon Aug 3 22:32:44 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: IMO, once it did its "alarm signal" job, it should bugger off and let me do something about it.
Mon Aug 3 22:34:00 2009
[dchat]
Sys@BlackHole: the pain is there coz when you think about the body channels chi to the hurt area, which helps
Mon Aug 3 22:35:30 2009
[dchat]
Sys@BlackHole: er body energy, Chinese word as in Tai Chi and Chi-gung
Mon Aug 3 22:36:09 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev muses that engineering deadlines are always made by people who don't know what we do...
Mon Aug 3 22:36:11 2009
[dchat]
Sys@BlackHole isn't really a metaphysical lover but has found energy healing to work by experimentation, wots ATP?
Mon Aug 3 22:36:32 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: the scientific equivalent of "body energy"?
Mon Aug 3 22:37:15 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: adenosine triphosphorate, i believe it's called
Mon Aug 3 22:37:27 2009
[dchat]
Sys@BlackHole: I see the body energy being different to that ATP is the chemical fuel for cells no? Chi is concept that is useful when trying to control your autonoumous systems including the healing ones
Mon Aug 3 22:38:01 2009
[dchat]
Sys@BlackHole: you envisage the chi flowing through the hurt, I'd not argue that the Chi really exists outside the mind.
Mon Aug 3 22:39:52 2009
[dchat]
Ninja@Dead Souls Dev: actually, raud, i'm pretty good at dealing with pain without drugs.
Mon Aug 3 22:40:17 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev is pretty good at giving pain requiring drugs...
Mon Aug 3 22:40:22 2009
[dchat]
Ideysus@ShadowMUDii: I found Aikido difficult in that there was so much talk about Ki (japanese Chi) and I simply could not take the concept seriously. I ended up simply deciding that it was really a conceptual thing that helped people work their bodies in the right way. I still can't take the pseudo scientific concept of undefined energy seriously, but if people can make things happen with the idea then great. I see it like the placebo effect. Just because it isn't 'real' doesn't mean we shouldn't give sugar pills if its working!
Mon Aug 3 22:40:35 2009
[dchat]
Ninja@Dead Souls Dev: had a root canal done without anesthetic once...dentist was more freaked than I was.
Mon Aug 3 22:41:17 2009
[dchat]
Ninja@Dead Souls Dev: wot you call placebo effect, i call self-hypnosis...same end result.
Mon Aug 3 22:42:23 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: hm. 1 hr 19 minutes until Coldplay. Someone kill me now. Please?
Mon Aug 3 22:42:54 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: concert. I'd say "rock concert", but I'm pretty sure rock has to has rhythm.
Mon Aug 3 22:43:33 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Why does it matter to you? Too close to not hear it?
Mon Aug 3 22:43:47 2009
[dchat]
Wodan@Discworld: iirc coldplay helps pay my bills, so not a bad word about them!
Mon Aug 3 22:44:26 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: well, I *am* too close to not hear as well, but also, like some sort of moron I bought tickets to actually attend. Some sort of Valentines stupidity.
Mon Aug 3 22:45:53 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: oh, ah. well, I'll be sure to write a review when I get back, then :P
Mon Aug 3 22:47:39 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: hm. I think the opening bands might actually be worse. Astounding.
Mon Aug 3 22:53:31 2009
[dchat]
Wodan@Discworld: google confirms, so if the sound is bad, blame the speakers :)
Mon Aug 3 22:54:45 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: from the pro and semi-pro stuff i had contact only with a&h hardware.
Mon Aug 3 22:55:03 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: and in that band's case, if the sound is bad blame the performers ;)
Tue Aug 4 05:24:36 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: the sound *was* bad, but not the mixing. The venue is really poor accoustically and the speakers are inadequate.
Mon Aug 10 02:39:58 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Had network probs. Cable between router and telephone box had been chewed. Thought it was ISP or BT problem at first.
Mon Aug 10 02:40:44 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Running network on full wireless atm. No hard link coz I can't find someone that sells a cable more than 10m long.
Mon Aug 10 03:08:16 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: I need to get a 15 ft cord. Much easier to find :P My current ones don't go around the corner very well.
Mon Aug 10 03:17:18 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: It's a pity I can't drill a hole through the wall. Last time the electrician did that he blew up 2 drills and destroyed a lot of his drill bits just to get a cable through.
Mon Aug 10 03:22:05 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: normans were vikings who went the way of the franks and took up a latin language.
Mon Aug 10 03:22:33 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Are my Xenophobic tendancies coming out again>
Mon Aug 10 03:22:50 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: hm. your dchats aren't coming through with a terminating \n
Mon Aug 10 03:23:19 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Strange, the chat module adds them in... or should.
Mon Aug 10 03:24:44 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Grr... Every time I read it I see a different sentance. Should drink more, or possibly less.
Mon Aug 10 03:26:09 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Hmm... Occasionally I get the not terminating lines but I put it down to people sending UTF-8 and my code having a fit over what to do with it.
Mon Aug 10 04:09:24 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: -.--. . -. -.-. --- -.. . -.. -.--.- ---... .--. .-. --- -... .- -... .-.. -.-- . .- ... .. . .-. - --- -.. . .- .-.. .-- .. - .... -- --- .-. ... . .-.-.-
Mon Aug 10 05:12:29 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: I wish I had a stone house. At least one doesn't have to worry about small leaks damaging supports. :)
Mon Aug 10 05:16:13 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: You could run copper strips along the edge of the ceilings?
Mon Aug 10 05:17:43 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: It's a bit like those induction loops for the seaf.
Mon Aug 10 05:18:12 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: It might... you'd have to figure out the right size for the wavelengths.
Mon Aug 10 05:18:38 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: Call it decorative moulding and it probably counts as a home improvement. *grin*
Mon Aug 10 05:18:55 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Meh! Quick trip to the library (big building with paper stuff) and you could get the correct info.
Mon Aug 10 05:19:42 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: Alas, my library isn't open (midnight in these parts). Ye Olde Internete might know.
Mon Aug 10 05:19:49 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Built an AM transmitter by etching a coil onto the PCB.
Mon Aug 10 05:20:16 2009
[dchat]
Mazu@Left To Die: Nah, just drill a few holes in the walls. That'll solve the problem.
Mon Aug 10 05:20:39 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Stone walls (real stone) and drills do not mix.
Mon Aug 10 05:21:11 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: If you're very patient, you could use acid to etch your way through.
Mon Aug 10 05:22:35 2009

Quixadhal@Bloodlines: If you don't have any acid handy, I have half an "Uncle Johnson's Thermonuclear Rib" left... it's taking me a while to finish.

Tricky@Rock the Halo: I already have the holes anyway, just not the right cable length.
Mon Aug 10 05:25:19 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: Hmmm, have a spare switch? You could use it as an extension.
Mon Aug 10 05:25:39 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Gonna need to pick up some telephone extensions.
Mon Aug 10 05:26:11 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Either that or switch to the other telephone line.
Mon Aug 10 05:27:35 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: Oh.. old school RJ-11 stuff. Given what I've seen, you could probably just bend some wire coat hangers together to make up the extra length.
Mon Aug 10 05:29:34 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: Umm... Don't want to muck about with the line since it a high quality one, was put in for the Post Office before they shut us down.
Mon Aug 10 05:31:08 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: Post Office? High Quality? Oh, you're not talking about the US Post Office... :)

Mazu@Left To Die: Military-grade internet routers. Sure, from the power alone it'll rot your brain after a few months, but at least the 2ft of concrete won't be a nuisance.

Tricky@Rock the Halo: At least I'll be fine in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Great Britain.
Mon Aug 10 05:43:14 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: Heh, reminds me of the old navy shortwave tranciever I got to play with in high school. It weighed about 90 pounds (40 kg?) and sucked down power... but it was perfectly safe to stand near. It was heavily shielded to prevent accidental re-transmission of what was received.
Mon Aug 10 05:44:22 2009
[dchat]
Tricky@Rock the Halo: I wish they would shield the motors on the local buses. Plays havoc with the wireless network and TV aerials.
Mon Aug 10 05:45:03 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: That's how a lot of ships were sunk in WWII... patrol ships would transmit and look for the echo from unshielded receivers.
Mon Aug 10 05:47:20 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: There's even a good chance most of your discovered targets would be easy ones, since most military vessels would be shielded.
Mon Aug 10 05:48:13 2009
[dchat]
Quixadhal@Bloodlines: I think folks were a LOT more clever back then... we're too lazy to think outside the box today, too specialized. :)

Mazu@Left To Die: "Mister President, what should we do about the situation in Iran?" Obama: "Consult Wikipedia. They MUST know!"
Mon Aug 10 05:51:10 2009

Quixadhal@Bloodlines: also too afraid of lawsuits. I took a close look at the lunar lander from the Apollo 11 missions, and it was clear many things were done how they were done, just to make it work. Today, it would never have been cleared to go.
Mon Aug 10 05:51:54 2009

Tricky@Rock the Halo: Hmm... I wonder if I still have the bookmark for those specs.
Mon Aug 10 05:54:28 2009

Quixadhal@Bloodlines: It was in the Jackson Space Museum for a while when I was a kid, so I got to actually see all the rubber bands and wire tiebacks up close. :)

Hellmonger@Trilogy: why does the oscillator diagram have B+ when it's solid state
Mon Aug 10 06:02:30 2009

Quixadhal@Bloodlines: Looks like they bypass the resisters at a given temperature. Remember, this thing had to operate in both direct solar radiation (very hot) and none (very cold).
Mon Aug 10 06:07:08 2009
[dchat]
Hellmonger@Trilogy: thermistors vary in resistance based on temp. they could provide skew for temp change related frequency drift

Hellmonger@Trilogy: Chrysler did launch operations support? who the hell would let a car company work on a space craft these days?

Damouze@Way of the Force: They say there's a hous in New Orleans, called "The Rising Sun", but I wouldn't exactly call it a hotel. :P

Tsarenzi@Sremassande: Maybe it also means 'do this if you want to make things exciting with unpredictable results possibly including crashing things'? :)
Tue Aug 11 00:11:55 2009
[dchat]
Tsarenzi@Sremassande: <grins> But they aren't going to guarantee that it will either.
Tue Aug 11 00:11:58 2009

[dchat]
Ninja@Dead Souls Dev: "With great power comes great responsibility".
Tue Aug 11 11:32:01 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: hmmmm. I seem to have catastrophic drive failure. the astounding part is it *seems* the failure was the cdrom, not the hard drive. how exciting.
Tue Aug 11 11:33:11 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: ... you mean the optical drive killed the hard disk? or did you had both of them on one tape, and broken cdrom made it look LIKE a hard disk failure?
Tue Aug 11 11:34:08 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: that's the current theory (they were sharing an IDE ribbon). If that's not truly the case, I'm in for more heartache shortly.
Tue Aug 11 11:35:08 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: hyeah, s/tape/ribbon/ ... i'm not thinking in english yet.
Tue Aug 11 11:35:33 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: yeah, for sure. hard drive is making ominous syncing noises, but it may be that I'm just hearing them more because I'm sitting on the floor beside the open case...
Tue Aug 11 11:36:11 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: if on some kind of unix, smartctl should be able to tell you a little bit more.
Tue Aug 11 11:36:39 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: cable/ribbon errors often result in udma errors that will show in smartctl
Tue Aug 11 11:37:35 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: also, it can give you an indication about mechanical state of the drive by means of temperature, recalibrations and sector replacement.
Tue Aug 11 11:38:18 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Speaking of which... i have a (working) 2005 hitachi disk here, which according to smarctl is completely healthy.
Tue Aug 11 11:38:53 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: But while accessing it you get this type of clicking/grinding noise which meant "normal operation" on the 500mb quantum drives.
Tue Aug 11 11:39:28 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: It also grinds an interesting three-second tune regularly (NOT parking, power saving is off).
Tue Aug 11 11:40:44 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: ah, hell. this drive is a seagate? I thought I stopped buying those things!
Tue Aug 11 11:40:51 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: So, SMART is one thing, external diag is another.
Tue Aug 11 11:41:37 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Heh, Hamlet. Guys were trying to sell me a seagate .12 series when i went to buy a WD recently.
Tue Aug 11 11:41:59 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: in my experience, Seagates fail. WDs get retired when they become too small.
Tue Aug 11 11:44:29 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Well, ST340014A: Power_On_Hours=14336 Power_Cycle_Count=2175 ... but it's a light-duty drive.
Tue Aug 11 11:45:18 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: I'm not sure how the manage to keep >60% of the market... unless they sell so much with pre-assembled PCs.
Tue Aug 11 11:45:27 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: heh. have had maxtors, quantums, seagates, wds, samsungs.. have had failures on all of those.
Tue Aug 11 11:47:36 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: oh, I know they all fail. And for that matter, I know that I've not had enough drives for my results to be statistically relevant. Regardless, every Seagate I've ever had has failed. not promising for a company.
Tue Aug 11 11:47:52 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: (except maybe the current one, but obviously the vote is still out)
Tue Aug 11 11:48:03 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: True, but when was last Great Global Failure for WD drives? I seem to think of 2001.
Tue Aug 11 11:48:53 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Seagate had this frimware bug last year, samsungs and maxtors were dying every second year...
Tue Aug 11 11:50:59 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: ST380011A, Power_On_Hours=15489, Power_Cycle_Count=399
Tue Aug 11 11:52:45 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Comparing those two readouts... it was shut down once a week, or so?
Tue Aug 11 11:52:54 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: but.. disks fail often enough for me to have all my anywhere relevant files on either raid1 or raid5.
Tue Aug 11 11:53:23 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: its my work machine, which tends to get shutdown for the weekend, and rebooten on monday morning.
Tue Aug 11 11:53:58 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Not big difference in uptime, and 6x less power cycles than mine.
Tue Aug 11 11:54:31 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: oh, that's good. thought I'd do a quick backup. but k3b says "Input/output error"
Tue Aug 11 11:55:13 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Borrow an empty drive of the same size, and do a sector copy.
Tue Aug 11 11:55:16 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: oh. and 'man k3b' says "can't resolve /path/to/file: No such file or directory"
Tue Aug 11 11:55:51 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: if it's 137gb or less, use COPYR. otherwise, not sure... hdclone?
Tue Aug 11 11:56:00 2009
[dchat]
Aidil@Way of the Force: rule 1. backup to a medium that is as fast for writing as technically possible. 2. ensure it does not share a controller with the possibly broken drive.
Tue Aug 11 11:56:29 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: yes, but he's trying to copy logical files.
Tue Aug 11 11:56:41 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: there's just the HD and the DVD at this point, and they're on separate ribbons.
Tue Aug 11 11:56:44 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: and to get any recovery chance he neesa a sector copy of the FS.
