[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: though i suspect a for real discussion of epistemology is not really threatened here
Thu Jul 9 15:54:40 2009
[dchat]
Detah@Dead Souls Dev: more forecasting. gonna be the same for the next 2 weeks at least.
Thu Jul 9 16:04:57 2009
[dchat]
Detah@Dead Souls Dev: hey! theres no numbers in there. I need numbers, man!
Thu Jul 9 17:22:46 2009
[dchat]
Detah@Dead Souls Dev: looks like the single backslash is being interpreted as an escape character and is being ignored by evall;
Thu Jul 9 17:23:40 2009
[dchat]
Detah@Dead Souls Dev: aha. it may be mixing with the end of file hard return. hmm. not sure what the solution is.
Thu Jul 9 18:00:27 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: Please move this to an appropriate channel
Thu Jul 9 18:00:39 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: In other words, the "coding? at MS? hah" channel
Thu Jul 9 18:01:43 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: only if you mail me PGR4 through the msecompanystore.com
Thu Jul 9 18:21:42 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: I wanted to hold out for Windows 7 as not to bother you but once
Thu Jul 9 18:21:50 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: And I think that's more than enough for now
Thu Jul 9 18:21:55 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: I'm not sure you've shipped to me before...
Thu Jul 9 18:22:05 2009
[dchat]
Kalinash@Fire and Ice: oh, and if some burly looking guys in blue hard hats show up at your door, i had nothing to do with it
Thu Jul 9 18:32:24 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: So tell me what I owe you, and if you like Paypal =)
Thu Jul 9 18:36:43 2009
[dchat]
Kalinash@Fire and Ice: of course, i love forcing people to buy stuff
Thu Jul 9 18:48:55 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: your alias @ microsoft.com is what I put in
Thu Jul 9 18:48:57 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: I thought paypal was closing or going bankrupt or something.
Thu Jul 9 18:49:49 2009
[dchat]
Kalinash@Fire and Ice: and that address is one of my registered email addresses
Thu Jul 9 18:50:00 2009
[dchat]
Kalinash@Fire and Ice: probably double checking any funds that come from Cali banks
Thu Jul 9 18:51:22 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: Hm, it's not showing in my "recent transactions", but my paypal balance is definitely reflecting less money
Thu Jul 9 18:51:44 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: Not funding it from a bank, I got a bit of cash in Paypal limbo
Thu Jul 9 18:52:03 2009
[dchat]
Kalinash@Fire and Ice: like paypal limbo money... my wife doesn't know when i spend it!
Thu Jul 9 18:56:47 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: People should really stop spending money on stuff like this:
Thu Jul 9 18:56:49 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/07/09/zoom-zoom-office-2010-promo-video/
Thu Jul 9 20:15:01 2009
[dchat]
Kalinash@Fire and Ice: the classic card or one of their credit cards?
Thu Jul 9 20:15:28 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: doesn't matter. he's 9. his signature doesn't count for anything. Any way you look at it, it would have been free money.
Thu Jul 9 20:16:51 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: ok, tanstaafl... it would take *work* to spend the "free" money...
Thu Jul 9 20:17:59 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: as in, why do you think that amex giving you a card is giving you free money?
Thu Jul 9 20:18:20 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: Kid gets mail. Opens it. Signs. Starts using the card.
Thu Jul 9 20:18:46 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: not me. my son. they issue him a card on his own, and how are they going to collect on it? He's not old enough for his signature to be binding. so any "cardholder agreement" is void.
Thu Jul 9 20:19:20 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: that's assuming they actually send you a fully ready card
Thu Jul 9 20:19:36 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: All you have to do is call a number and beep beep beep and it's activated.
Thu Jul 9 20:19:38 2009
[dchat]
Zahir@Introvert Desires: time for daddy to upgrade the home entertainment system?
Thu Jul 9 20:19:53 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: Of course, for a significant amount of money they'll sue you
Thu Jul 9 20:20:01 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: well, this wasn't a ready card. and maybe if we *had* sent in the application it would have been denied. The fact that they mailed the offer at all is not a good sign of intelligence, though.
Thu Jul 9 20:20:14 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: the offers get sent more or less randomly
Thu Jul 9 20:20:20 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: But ultimately the law is on your side - there has been no binding agreement between a person of responsible age and the company. There has also not been any instance of identity fraud.
Thu Jul 9 20:20:28 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: Yes, well, you wouldn't be able to keep the stuff
Thu Jul 9 20:20:48 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: no, they're not random. they're based on generalized credit report information.
Thu Jul 9 20:20:57 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: THey SHOULD be based on generalized credit report info
Thu Jul 9 20:21:10 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: if the credit reporting agencies can't have "not a freaking minor" as one of the requirements, then they're not doing their jobs very well.
Thu Jul 9 20:21:52 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: It's not, but if the kid activates the card and starts using it
Thu Jul 9 20:22:21 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: I've *never* seen a fully ready card being sent randomly by mail, incidentally
Thu Jul 9 20:22:42 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: DH works to measure up to his father's genius
Thu Jul 9 20:23:16 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: It might be stupid for CC offers to be sent to kids
Thu Jul 9 20:23:21 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: if anything I was criticizing your silly claim of being able to get free money
Thu Jul 9 20:23:30 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: But realistically, he's saying the odds of a kid actually getting to a point of using an active card is very low
Thu Jul 9 20:23:39 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: However, stranger things happen in this crazy world
Thu Jul 9 20:24:05 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: your "no free lunch" example was just as silly
Thu Jul 9 20:24:20 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: basically claiming that you'd be able to get/keep anything out of this little scam of yours is kinda silly
Thu Jul 9 20:24:30 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: *I* would say the odds of banks being allowed to buy and sell interests in amalgamated junk mortgages was very low too. and yet it happened.
Thu Jul 9 20:24:49 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: I'm sure this CC thing has happened before
Thu Jul 9 20:25:23 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: wait, I'm confused. you *do* understand there are things you can purchase that cannot be repossessed, right?
Thu Jul 9 20:25:38 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: are we still talking about the same thing?
Thu Jul 9 20:25:55 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: yes, Kali, but *you* are the only one that would want to.
Thu Jul 9 20:27:25 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: oh well. AmEx is being overly slopping and Citibank is being overly cautious. I guess the latter is better, but still annoying.
Thu Jul 9 20:27:31 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: As improbable as it may be, that URL back there is basically saying what Hamstring and I are - contracts are not legally binding with minors
Thu Jul 9 20:27:42 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: they've called me twice in the last week. Can't seem to figure out that I was traveling up the coast.
Thu Jul 9 20:28:08 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: "Legally, I don't see how a minor, regardless of how they participated in it, could be held responsible for the debt," says Robert E. Duff, a consumer law attorney with Indiana Consumer Law Group.
Thu Jul 9 20:28:20 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: there's a difference between that and actually keeping the stuff
Thu Jul 9 20:28:28 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: I didn't say you'd go to jail or be responsible
Thu Jul 9 20:28:42 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: Then we enter into the realm of "oh but I spent it all on Microsoft Live Points, how are you gonna repo that?"
Thu Jul 9 20:30:08 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: Maybe I should encourage my 10-year-old daughter to get a credit card or two. We could buy a new wardrobe for the family, add a big screen TV, or get that cell phone she's been wanting. Perhaps I could suggest she send me and my husband on a beach vacation filled with umbrella-decorated pink drinks and white-glove service. Then when the bills arrive, we could tell the lenders that she's only 10: How could she be responsible? When those accounts are closed, I could try it again with my 7-year-old. And then my 4-year-old. He knows how to write his own name now.
Thu Jul 9 20:30:12 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: for less than perhaps $10k, it's probably not worth their effort.
Thu Jul 9 20:30:55 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: yes, it is. that's why I called and yelled at them and then tore up the applicatio.
Thu Jul 9 20:31:06 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: DH, CC companies will NOT go quietly nd try to repossess stuff
Thu Jul 9 20:31:11 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: if the kid is doing all of this of his own volition, that's pretty different from the parent doing it through the kid
Thu Jul 9 20:31:12 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: But we're talking about legal liability here
Thu Jul 9 20:31:43 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: But you will only be legally required to give back the stuff if you are proven faulty
Thu Jul 9 20:32:14 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: *and* they have to admit publically that they were stupid enough to offer and then give a credit card to a child.
Thu Jul 9 20:32:37 2009
[dchat]
Sinistrad@Dead Souls Dev: and we're all "but dude, they make mistakes and then try to screw you for their mistakes"
Thu Jul 9 20:33:29 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: i cant talk about dh on this channel :( ot's the polite channel :(
Thu Jul 9 20:34:56 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: woman hung up on me when I asked her when Amex was going to be asking for bailout money.
Thu Jul 9 20:35:55 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: Oh, I expected nothing less. Although, technically, that job generally has a "don't hang up on people or we'll fire you" policy.
Thu Jul 9 20:36:11 2009
[dchat]
DavidHaley@Dead Souls Dev: I'm sure you could file a complaint with their customer service department
Thu Jul 9 20:36:34 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: nah. I wanted her to hang up and she did it. Can't fault her for my success.
Thu Jul 9 20:37:28 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: besides, I worked in a call center once. hanging up is the only good part of the day.
Thu Jul 9 20:42:01 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: weird. did you know that email names could have ' in them?
Thu Jul 9 20:42:23 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Email addresses can have a lot of onteresting things in them.
Thu Jul 9 20:42:41 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: A lot of verification code doesn't handle some cases.
Thu Jul 9 20:43:05 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Some fail even on the simple "John Doe"@example.com .
Thu Jul 9 20:44:01 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: google a little for rfc822 or 'email regex' or similar...
Thu Jul 9 20:44:03 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: this guy's mailname is sean.o'brien I bet there are lots of mailers that throw a fit.
Thu Jul 9 21:05:38 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Dead_Souls_vlad: not fully configured yet but it did compile perfectly on osx
Fri Jul 10 03:06:45 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@Discworld: aww. I Ctrl-C'ed my program and it didn't let go of the socket it was accepting on!
Fri Jul 10 03:43:42 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: anyone know of a good (and commonly available) set of hashmaps for unix-C?
Fri Jul 10 18:50:41 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev: I just remember quite a bit of chat on here a couple of years ago...
Fri Jul 10 18:50:56 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: great. here I was pondering the implication of silence. guess I'll have to start over later.
Fri Jul 10 18:51:55 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev Shoots a psychic dart of distraction at Hamlet!
Fri Jul 10 18:52:05 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: There are times when it scrolls faster then you can read. But on other occasions it can be days betwwen chats.
Fri Jul 10 18:52:16 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: I'm researching that for quite some time, but no progress.
Fri Jul 10 18:52:44 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: I eliminated tides, phase of the moon, and the axial alignment.
Fri Jul 10 18:52:58 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev: ah well it is just good to know you all are still alive. ttyl
Fri Jul 10 18:54:20 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@Discworld: I once spent a year in Greece... sitting in silence just to better understand the sound of a whisper.
Fri Jul 10 18:56:42 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev: I suppose if I wanted to read chat real bad I could code my mud good enough to be interesting...
Fri Jul 10 19:59:55 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: wowo check out the big giant chanlist update
Fri Jul 10 20:24:39 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Frontiers: it's a sweet deal. i know the guy what runs the router
Fri Jul 10 20:50:01 2009
[dchat]
Hamlet@WWC: TOMATOES! I have tomatoes. small. and green. But tomatoes!
Fri Jul 10 21:42:14 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: ohh, another victim of /cmds/creators/i3who.c ;(
Fri Jul 10 21:52:40 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: That command runs a mass rwho request to all connected muds. Usually prints at least 400 lines to the screen.
Fri Jul 10 21:54:40 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Most people did. Next alpha will deal with that, hopefully.
Fri Jul 10 21:58:00 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev: ah crap I did not know it bothered everyone to do that...
Fri Jul 10 21:58:42 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: it doesn't bother (almost) anybody. It's just the fact that we receive a notification upon receiving a remote request.
Fri Jul 10 21:59:30 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: So when i saw a rwho form you on two different muds at the same time, i knew you ran into that trap called i3who.c ;)
Fri Jul 10 22:11:26 2009
[dchat]
Halcyon@Dracul's Castle: now the temptation to try it is overwhelming... c.c
Fri Jul 10 22:15:32 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev thinks, "I wonder if Halcyon knows that "Dracul's Castle" is my house."
Fri Jul 10 22:17:10 2009
[dchat]
Halcyon@Dracul's Castle: multimud officially has the prettiest who output
Fri Jul 10 22:17:42 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev . o O ( Cardboard castle? Who'd have thought... )
Fri Jul 10 22:20:27 2009
[dchat]
Halcyon@Dracul's Castle: is there a command that, given a command name, tells you the file it's defined in?
Fri Jul 10 22:24:25 2009
[dchat]
Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: hey, cool. I thought that it catches only verbs and cmds... but it will even tell you if such command is a local add_action! Didn't knew that.
Fri Jul 10 22:55:18 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev: Well Crat is definately worth what we pay him...
Fri Jul 10 22:56:34 2009
[dchat]
Vlad@Other_World_Dev: honestly, I think the stuff he codes on here is more involved than the code I get paid to work on... I for one really appreciate it.
Fri Jul 10 23:14:48 2009
[dchat]
Xiron@Age of Immortals: I can see this will take several hours of browsing through cats :D
Sun Jul 12 15:18:18 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: oooooh it sake! i must have had too much :P
Sun Jul 12 15:19:24 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: anyhow these driver things are way difficult :-)
Sun Jul 12 15:19:48 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: but i might have a semi-functional compiler by tuesday.
Sun Jul 12 15:20:15 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: maybe in another week something that's moderately testable- but who can really say :P
Sun Jul 12 15:21:42 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: it does vaguely resemble LPC but no happy code implemented atm
Sun Jul 12 15:24:16 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: we will see how well this 3 week trial run of actually coding something goes :P.
Sun Jul 12 19:46:39 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: is there a good reason for LARGEST_PRINTABLE_STRING being ~8000, or did that just seem like a good big number?
Sun Jul 12 19:51:44 2009
[dchat]
Chil@paploo_dev: Looks to primarily be an artificial limit to make you learn not to spam yer users all at once with a big buffer or something.
Sun Jul 12 20:08:51 2009
[dchat]
Kalinash@Fire and Ice: i think they did it just to confound Crat in the future
Sun Jul 12 20:17:05 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: Kal how far did you get with the pike driver? will you let me steal code? :P
Sun Jul 12 20:19:13 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: i am still trying to construct a minimal set of efuns to see what I am confronted with.
Sun Jul 12 20:23:36 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: dont mind the orc if you have a pike driver :P
Sun Jul 12 20:30:43 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: hmm I should have something by this week hoping to get eoperators in and have at least string mappings and arrays working.
Sun Jul 12 20:32:26 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: you never know those pikes might have nukes in em.
Sun Jul 12 20:35:16 2009
[dchat]
Silenus@Dead Souls Dev: not sure i care about the chest i just like explosions :P
Fri Jul 17 15:05:42 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: yesterday i tried to explain to my s.o. why i'd been stalking greg stein (in order to get permission to modify and distribute lima in a fixed up way)
Fri Jul 17 15:05:48 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: i had not expected how *strange* it would sound to a normal
Fri Jul 17 15:09:30 2009
[dchat]
Chil@paploo_dev: Tracking down a dev team for licensing signoffs is like a groupie touring with a band.
Fri Jul 17 15:10:32 2009
[dchat]
Chil@paploo_dev: and you usually have to start with the lame guy that just started playing with them last year or something
Fri Jul 17 15:11:54 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: so get this, like, last month someone says "hey whyncha tell lars penjo to come visit lpmuds.net"
Fri Jul 17 15:12:44 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: says he works on embedded systems for cars now
Fri Jul 17 15:15:47 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: but he' swedish. i think that's per se immediately fulfulling. cant think of anything that would improve his life
Fri Jul 17 16:10:48 2009
[dchat]
Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: wodan wodan wodan wodan wodan wodan wodan wodan
Sat Jul 18 09:59:15 2009
[dchat]
Eddard@Valar Morghulis: completly noob question... how I speak with an npc?
Sat Jul 18 11:29:24 2009
[dchat]
Eddard@Valar Morghulis: but If i want to know the things i can ask?
Sat Jul 18 11:30:31 2009
[dchat]
Eddard@Valar Morghulis: ARf its hard to know how a mudlib works from 0
Sat Jul 18 11:30:43 2009
[dchat]
Halcyon@Dracul's Castle: like the class trainers will tell you what to ask for training in
Sat Jul 18 11:31:44 2009
[dchat]
Eddard@Valar Morghulis: Im trying to play the town domain, the default domian
Sat Jul 18 11:32:15 2009
[dchat]
Eddard@Valar Morghulis: And I am level 1 yet....X_D this is depressing
Sat Jul 18 11:32:31 2009
[dchat]
Halcyon@Dracul's Castle: if you go to the mansion that will quickly change
Sat Jul 18 11:32:44 2009
[dchat]
Eddard@Valar Morghulis: I am in the mansion...but I dont know how to enter
Sat Jul 18 11:33:14 2009
[dchat]
Eddard@Valar Morghulis: Dont find the key, and I dont know how to use the ladder
Sat Jul 18 11:33:58 2009
[dchat]
Eddard@Valar Morghulis: well actually i've seen the room code and I dont know anything that allows to climb to the opened window really
Sat Jul 18 11:34:09 2009
[dchat]
Halcyon@Dracul's Castle: one of the npcs near where you first spawn in, at the university, sells the walkthrough hintbook
Sat Jul 18 11:36:18 2009
[dchat]
Halcyon@Dracul's Castle: it covers almost everything in the default domain
Sat Jul 18 11:44:41 2009
[dchat]
Eddard@Valar Morghulis: there is a lot of time i dont play a mud.... I noticed...

Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: those multipass lightnings are cool. That one was zapping for almost 2 secs... forty-fifty arcs in total.

Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: I stand corrected. There's a thing more annoying than "wall-brick" power supplies.

Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: Stupid question. I have a bunch of pcs with no central server. Is there anything out there that would offer automatic ad-hoc mounting of remote filesystems as nodes go up and down? NFS is centralized and handles disconnections very poorly. sshfs is manual. smbfs... well, samba doesn't do automounts, and sometimes behaves weirdly. Any hints?
Sun Jul 19 16:21:34 2009

Raudhrskal@Dead Souls Dev: autofs is a mounter... and the only networked backend it supports seems to be nfs

Jessica@Dead_Souls_jessica: better to remember a small string of commands accurately than a large one and it up all the time.

Cratylus@Dead Souls Dev: once you change your muds name to something not-nooby then you'll also have access to imc2 channels
